UPC (Universal Product Code) is used primarily in the retail industry as a
POS (point of sales) barcode symbology.
UPC is used in the United States and Canada in the
retail industry to uniquely identify a product and it`s manufacturer
so that cash register systems can automatically look up the
related data.
There are two types of UPC codes UPC-A and UPC-E.
UPC-AThe UPCA is a twelve digit numeric barcode and the structure of the code is as follows.1 = System digit. 2-6 = The manufacturer`s ID number, given by the appropriate registering body. 7-11 = Represents the product code. 12 = A check digit based on the preceding 11 digits calculated using the Modulo 10 algorithm. The UPC-A has two versions, one can be augmented with a 2 digit supplement and the other with a 5 digit supplement to the right of the barcode to increase the amount of information encoded.
