EAN - European Article Numbering is based on the UPCA standard. Primarily in the retail industry as a POS (point of sales) barcode symbology UPC is used in Europe, India and many other parts of the world in the retail industry to uniquely identify a product and it`s manufacturer so that cash register systems can automatically look up the related data.
There are two types of EAN codes EAN-12 and EAN-8.
EAN-13
Ean 13 is a thirteen digit barcode and has four parts.

Number System : (A= 2 or3 digits)
The number system consists of 2 or 3 digits which identify the country, economic region or the authority who assigned the manufacturer code. Any number system which starts with the digit ' 0 ' is a UPC bar code.

Manufacturer Code : (B= 5 or more digits)
Manufacturer code is a unique code assigned by the numbering authority indicated by the Number System Code. All products produced by this company will have the same number system and manufacturer code. EAN uses a variable length manufacturer code which consists of 5 digits or more. If the manufacturer has less number products then a longer manufacturer code is assigned thereby reducing the space for product codes for better utilization of the numbering system.

Product Code :(C=12 - {A+B} digits)
Product Code is a unique code assigned by the manufacturer himself without consulting anyone unlike the manufacturer code which is assigned by the numbering authority. Every product should be uniquely numbered and no more than one product should have the same product code.

Check Digit :(D=1 digit)
The Check digit is an additional digit at the end of the barcode to verify that the barcode has scanned correctly. Printing imperfections, inconsistent scanning speed and many other problems can cause a barcode to be scanned incorrectly thereby feeding wrong data which can create infinite problems. Check digit ensures that rest of the data of the barcode is intact. The check digit for EAN-13 barcode is calculated using the Modulo 10 algorithm and is based on the remaining digits.

Total A + B + C + D = 13

The EAN-13 has two versions, one can be augmented with a 2 digit supplement and the other with a 5 digit supplement to the right of the barcode to increase the amount of information encoded.
